Letter from the President, June 2009
Thank you for supporting the PTO during the school year. It’s hard to believe that the year is drawing to a close! Thanks to the hard work of our volunteers, we were again able to provide $30,000 in enrichment activities to our schools, including programs like Historical Perspective, Wing Masters, Kaleidoscope Theatre, Author Steve Krasner, Star Lab, Techsploration, Engineers Teaching Algebra, and Internet safety, just to name a few. In addition, the PTO also sponsored the student newspapers at Warren and Mindess, a partial scholarship for the Washington DC and NYC foreign language studies field trips, and a classroom computer through the AEFI computer initiative and recently donated just over $2,000 to the school art and music programs.
We hope you enjoyed both the traditional PTO events and our new favorites: Autumn Festival, Iron Chef Cook Off, Kids’ Night Out, and the Harlem Wizards! And don’t forget to register your Pittaway or Warren students for Prismatic Magic: American Pride Spectacular coming this Friday (June 5)!
Our last PTO meeting will be held June 10th at 7:00 in the Mindess conference room. That night, we will vote in a new board for the upcoming school year. Please try to join us.
The following positions are currently open for next year. If we are unable to find event volunteers, these events will not move forward. Please consider offering your time and talent! Please contact me at hkeaveny@verizon.net or 508-879-5909 if you are interested.
AUTUMN FESTIVAL CHAIR OR CO-CHAIR: The Autumn Festival is scheduled for October 17th at the Warren School, but will only happen if we can find a few people to take over this fall favorite! Volunteers to manage concessions and the Kids Room are also needed. Past co-chairs Rose Flaherty and Carolyn Beaton are available to help you get started and answer questions!
FALL FUNDRAISER CHAIR OR CO-CHAIR AND SCHOOL REPRESENTATIVES: The fall fundraiser is booked and ready to roll out, but we are in need of a chairperson to oversee the kick-off school assemblies and the ordering and delivery process. We are also looking for one or more representatives from each school to be a point of contact and assist the chairperson.
PTO PRESIDENT OR CO-PRESIDENT: And last, but certainly not least, the PTO is in need or one or more dedicated individuals to take the reins of the PTO for next year. This is a great opportunity be become more involved with the schools and help make a difference for every school-aged child in Ashland. Many seasoned PTO members remain on the board to support the PTO and to transition in a new President. The time commitment is what you can afford and is honestly not overwhelming. Many past presidents worked full-time while managing the PTO presidency. The board meets monthly. If you’re the kind of person who likes to work hands-on, can direct others, and wants to make a real difference for the children in Ashland, this could be the perfect opportunity for you.
Finally, a heartfelt thank you to the long time volunteers who will not be returning as PTO board members next year: Marcia Gilbert, Peg Grimes, Cyndi Raabe , and Judy Romano. We will miss their dedication and leadership, but know that we will still see them around town, working to help improve the schools for all of the students of Ashland!
Thank you again for a great year!
Fondly,
Heather Keaveny
Interim PTO President
