Special Endowments
In June 2009, the K-12 PTO was pleased to grant $13,828
for the following teacher and administrator requests:
- $3,235 for Warren School to purchase student workbooks for the Handwriting Without Tears program for the 2009-2010 school year. This item was cut from the school budget for this year and the PTO is happy to fund this integral part of the handwriting program.
- $2,600 for the 2010 Ashland Middle School 6th grade field trip to the Christa McAuliffe Center. This trip is tied to both the sixth grade science curriculum and the Massachusetts frameworks.
- $2,083 for supplies for the music and art programs at Pittaway, Warren, Mindess and AMS.
- $1,750 for the Mindess School to replace classroom chalkboards with white boards in 5 classrooms. White boards are more easily visible and eliminate the allergy issues associated with chalk dust. To date, the chalkboards in 8 classrooms have been replaced through additional grants from Harvard Pilgrim.
- $1,260 for 18 Reading A-Z subscriptions to be used at Pittaway, Warren, Mindess and AMS. Reading A-Z is a non-fiction reading program supplement.
- $1,100 for the 2009–2010 Pittaway School music program. This program has been funded through grant money over the last several years, however the grants are significantly reduced for the upcoming school year. Pittaway is the only school in the district without formal music instruction and the music program is necessary for accreditation.
- $1,000 to for Ashland High School to help defray the cost of the 2010 Senior Workshops.
- $500 for busing for the Spring 2009 first grade field trip to see BUGZ, the culmination of their unit of study on butterflies.
- $300 to the Ashland Public Schools Food Services Director Lisa Beaudin to start a fund that will be used to implement a Point of Sale system in the cafeterias at Pittaway, Warren, Mindess and AMS. AHS already successfully uses the system. Lisa is pursuing grants from other organizations to meet the $25,000 cost of district-wide implementation.
